The history of the Barolo Palace dates back to 1920 when the architect Mario Palanti, commissioned by Luigi Barolo, designed this monumental building in which it is possible to discover infinite analogies and references to the work “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri. The palace stands out as a powerful symbol of the Italian community and culture that has enriched Argentina.
Over the years, the Barolo Palace has established itself as one of the most important and famous symbols of the city of Buenos Aires and, as a confirmation, it is one of the most visited private buildings in the city by the national and foreign public.
At the time of its inauguration in 1923, Palazzo Barolo was surpassed in height only by the steel-framed skyscrapers of Chicago and New York.
At that time it was considered the tallest concrete construction in the world.
Inspired by the Divine Comedy, the building is composed of three main parts: Hell, represented by the floors starting in the basement up to the 4th floor with multiple allegories and ornaments, Purgatory and finally Paradise represented by the lighthouse that stands on the top to create a bridge of light over the Río de la Plata.
Bajos del Barolo With a surface area of more than 1800 m2, Bajos del Barolo offers multiple spaces that can function independently or integrated for the organization of a wide range of events. The sum of all the proposals manage to reach an annual average of 18,000 people who visit us from both the country and foreigners, growing year after year.
These spaces were originally the building's warehouses and were forgotten for more than 40 years. In 2019, we decided to repurpose the spaces to turn them into a Cultural Center open to the entire community with the intention that the public could participate in different artistic and cultural activities for free.
After the end of the work that required a significant investment, the proposals were developed in a dynamic and uninterrupted manner since the beginning of the activities, limiting only the period of mandatory restriction determined as a result of the pandemic.
Today we can assure that Bajos del Barolo has become an example of reconversion, assigning it an important cultural value thanks to the important achievements obtained in such a short time, adding to the wide cultural offer that the City of Buenos Aires has.
